The Letter G is an unreliable letter. It makes the "guh" (hard g - /g/ sound) as in g arden or do g or the "juh" (soft g - /j/ sound) as in g iraffe. When combined with the letter "d", a grapheme is formed which sounds like /j/ (as in le dg er) G is part of the 'gh' digraph which can make the /g/ sound as in ghost or the /f/ sound as in cou gh. Read books with lots of /k/ and /g/ sounds. Try to provide lots of good models of the /k/ and /g/ sounds for your children by giving them as much exposure to the sounds as possible. A good way to do this is to sit down with your children and read books that have lots of these sounds in them. It’s o.k. to slow down and overemphasize these sounds.

These books G sounds book such a great tools to introduce phonics and letter sounds. I love the way that Jane creates a story using different objects that have the G sound. I would love to use this book in a kindergarten classroom and as a resource for the students to use throughout the school year/5.

The hard letter G sound will include words such as gone, wagon, and goat. By reading some books that expose the words with the letter G sounds, children will get more familiar to recognize and to classify the letter G sounds.

This is a list of my favorite sound loaded books that I personally use in speech therapy to target articulation of specific phonemes. It can be very difficult to find books in the library that provides repetition of a specific phoneme.

Often the target word may be in the title, but not repeated very much in the book. In Old English, the letter g represented four sounds.

(Check out the etymological note in the OED for details.) I shall limit my remarks to the two sounds of g in modern English. Unlike the letter c, which is an alternate spelling for the sounds of k and s and has no sound of its own, the letter g does have one sound of its own: the “hard” sound heard in glove.
